INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY GS113
Sociology is a discipline that helps us to better understand social behavior. Knowledge of how we behave and why we do so is important in whatever we do. The study of human societies makes us aware of the vast majority of ways people behave as they interact and why such varied behaviors occur. It helps us to understand how easily we can be molded to behave in certain ways, and how difficult it is to change attitudes and behaviors once we accept them. Such awareness may broaden our understanding of self and society and make us aware of overlooked possibilities and sacrificed options, inspiring us to do more experimentation, risk taking, and enriched living.

SOCIAL PROBLEMS GS362
This course provides an in-depth study of current social problems. Emphasis is on causes, consequences, and possible solutions to problems associated with families, schools, workplaces, communities, and the environment. Upon completion, students should be able to recognize, define, analyze, and propose solutions to these problems. Throughout the semester, we will explore ways in which these social problems are part of the organization of society, and way we can use our own agency to address them. |
